MERITON

LATE JULY 1863

Polly lay on her stomach on the rug, legs bent at the knee, her feet in the air, reading a book. She turned when she heard the door handle click. The expression on her face turned from indifference to sheer delight when she saw her governess enter. Springing to her feet, she launched herself at the woman, nearly knocking her flying.

“Aggie! Oh, Aggie! You came back.” Polly squeezed Agnes so tight around the middle it made the governess cough.

“Goodness, child. You will break me in half. Come now, let me see you?” Agnes took the girl by the shoulders and gently pulled her away, bending to look her in the eyes. Polly beamed back at her and Agnes’s heart felt the first sprinkling of happiness since she had left her homeland for what was possibly the last time. “My how you have grown these past months, sweetheart. I have missed you so much.”

“I missed you, Aggie, ever so much.” Suddenly her eyes lit up, her expression full of hope. “Does this mean Papa is back too?” Polly made to run past Agnes, but the woman held her fast.

“I am afraid not, child.” She sighed heavily and gestured to the bed. “Sit down, darling. I will try to explain as best I can.”

Looking utterly crestfallen, Polly did as she was instructed. Agnes sat down beside her and smoothed the little girl’s hair with her hand.

“Have you seen Papa? Is he alright?”

“I saw him but a few weeks ago, he was absolutely fine. Your father helped me to catch the ship to England.”

“But why didn’t he get on it too?” The trace of a tear formed in her eye and she quickly blinked it away.

“He tried so hard, my little love,” Agnes cooed soothingly, “but there were a lot of angry people at the dock and someone took his ticket. The ship was about to sail so your father told me to go ahead and get on board. He was unable to follow. I am so sorry.”

Polly tried not to let her lip quiver.

“But… he will get on the next ship, won’t he?”

“I am sure he will be home as soon as he can.”

“What about Shins? Did you see him? Is he with Papa?”

“Yes! I did see him.” Agnes said cheerily, relieved to be able to offer the girl some good news. “And, he is very well. Although… I admit to being surprised to see him in New York. No one has yet explained to me how or why he came to be there.”

“Oh, that is good! Shins will take care of Papa and bring him home. It will all be alright,” Polly said with a determined nod of her head. “He’ll be back soon as you know it.”

“But, how did a dog get all the way across the ocean, dear? He cannot have crossed alone? How did he find Lord Gunn when he had been gone from New York for so long?”

“Why was Papa gone from New York? Wasn’t he with you this whole time?”

“Why, no.
